Fascinating Indian study in the Dermatology Online Journal referenced on the National Institutes of Health website. It seems Topiramate, a drug used to treat migranes and epilepsy, has promising results in decreasing many kinds of scarring--from acne to hypertrophic.
A popular oral drug used to treat epilepsy and migraines may also be an effective weapon against scars. When researchers gave scarred patients daily low doses of Topiramate for three months, two-thirds of them saw at least a 50 percent improvement—including 31 out of 33 of those with acne scars. According to Rakesh Bharti, a researcher at the BDC Research Center in Punjab, India, the drug works by "increasing collagen-tissue formation." Though no side effects were reported, Topiramate can cause fatigue, dizziness, and lapses in concentration at the high doses used to treat epilepsy, so further studies are needed to determine its safety at the doses required to treat scars.
